Santa Monica Residence
Santa Monica, CA | Completed 2020
A small, outdated bungalow was transformed into a two-story, light-filled home. With Spanish Colonial influences, traditional materials and architectural elements are made modern with clean, simple lines. Arches are used to frame specific views and spaces throughout. Immediately upon entering the arched front door, a two-and-a-half story foyer featuring a custom ridge skylight, arched clerestory windows, and custom wraparound staircase welcomes the owners and guests, setting the tone for the rest of the house.
Santa Barbara Residence
Santa Barbara, CA | Completed 2015
The existing, oceanfront residence underwent a renovation to its East wing to transform two guest suites into a private home theater and a single guest suite with sitting room and en suite bathroom. The retrofit home theater brings the state-of-the-art quality of the big screen into the comfort of the owners' home. The redesigned guest suite was updated with a small sitting room and refreshed interior design. A complete redesign of the pool area, just outside of the guest suite, was also included in the scope. A new trellis makes the guest suite more incorporated into the outdoor gardens. Additionally the pool area was brought out of hiding to take advantage of the site’s ocean bluff views. Large, bulky balustrades around the site and on the upper-floor balconies interrupted the ocean view and were eliminated where possible. The required guardrails were redesigned to be more open and elegant as to not impact the site’s vistas.
El Segundo, CA | Completed 2012
This loft was designed to function as an apartment dwelling for the ‘resident artist’ at the El Segundo Museum of Art. The layout features a compact kitchenette and bathroom in order to maximize the working space for each artist to customize the studio to fit their needs. Floor to ceiling windows were used to highlight the 12 foot ceilings, flooding the space with an abundance of natural light. Doty Master Suite
Lawndale, CA | Completed 2015
Just a couple of miles from the beach, the owners of this 1950's cottage wanted to make more room for family visits. A Master Bedroom Suite addition gave them the luxury they desired for everyday living, and a space they can close off for themselves during grandchildren sleepovers.
Cave Creek, AZ | Unbuilt
The design of the renovation and addition to this existing 3,000 sf residence aimed to use the bones of the building to enhance its mid-century modern characteristics, while modernizing it for a 21st century family. In order to accomplish this, all finishes and furnishings were updated throughout the existing home, and a master bedroom suite, office, and garage addition was designed to provide the space needed for comfortable living.
Calle Compo Residence
Thousand Oaks, CA | Estimated completion 2016
The new 4,579 sf residence brings the outside in and enhances the views of the native, undeveloped adjacent canyon. Smoke Tree Residence
Palm Springs, CA | Completed 2015
The Phinny residence in historic Smoke Tree Ranch focuses on vistas, creates covered outdoor patios and incorporates large glass openings into the design. Once the site of a 1,674 sf vacation cabin, the new residence keeps the cottage spirit alive through roof articulation and a courtyard-style spatial organization that makes the larger footprint still appear petite and charming. The 4 bedroom, 4.5 bath home includes an open living and kitchen area with a den area adding separation to the master suite. The large attached garage and home office are functional luxuries that are also incorporated into the design.
Paradise Valley, AZ | Completed 2009
JMA designed this remodel for first-time homebuyers who purchased a spacious, but outdated residence. The design-build process took on a sense of urgency when they announced the coming arrival of their first child. The new plan converted the disjointed living-dining-kitchen into an open floor plan with rich wood floors and bright white cabinetry. The master bedroom suite was improved with new openings to the outside and an adjacent nursery. The hall bathroom and bedrooms were updated with new finishes and cabinetry. JMA also re-designed the landscape; minimizing the hard surfaces while providing garden pathways to the new front porch. JMA managed the construction…and completed the project just in time for the arrival of their new daughter.
Phoenix, AZ | Completed 2007
This renovation in Phoenix, Arizona combined a modern layout with traditional finishes to produce a cozy home that seamlessly blends into its neighborhood. The existing 3 bedroom 1 bath house was typical for the 1940’s…a layout that does not function very well for today’s modern families. Sacrificing one bedroom allowed for a master en suite and generous walk-in closet. A second bathroom was added for the remaining guest bedroom. Careful material selection mixed durable, budget-minded materials like subway tile with high-end lighting and hardware to give the home a timeless feel.
